THE MOUNTAINTOP EXPERIENCE WITH GOD

EXODUS 3:1-6; MATTHEW 5:1-2

Brethren, the Mountain is a spiritual and holy place where a holy atmosphere is created by God for a man to interact, encounter, fellowship, worship, receive instruction and be made into who God desires he is. The Mountain is a place of separation, where God dwells, and it was in such a one that Moses met God. This man had an agenda of feeding his father-in-law’s flock at the backside of the mountain but upon climbing up this mountain, the Lord who awaited him, encountered him for His purpose. Now when the bush began to burn without being consumed and Moses thought to understand what the sight meant, God spoke to him from the midst of the burning bush. This is the same experience anyone who climbs this Mount of communion has; Moses heard God. But before God could speak with him, He had some prerequisites for their continued interaction and fellowship- Moses had to take off his sandals. The sandals in the Old time, amongst the Israelites, were a symbol of uncleanness and so Moses had to do away with it in order to tarry successfully in God’s presence. And he took them off. But now, in our day, it is more than just washing feet or removing shoes; the Lord desires to bless, help, commune with, save, protect, secure and fellowship with us, but before this can be possible, we must put away all sin from our lives. Sin defiles… and so before a man can stand before God, he ought first to be cleansed.

Moses was born a deliverer but he knew not Who had called him. He was born in a difficult period when all Hebrew baby boys were killed so as to bring the Hebrews continually under slavery without the interference of any strong male or even a thought of revolution; so male babies were drowned. And here, in this time, God arranged the birth of a baby boy who would deliver and judge His people; though his existence was threatened, yet his life was spared. Though Moses was taught and raised in the palace by the servants of Pharaoh’s daughter who drew him out from the water through God’s providence, yet he grew also in knowledge of his people. And it happened at a time that he tried to defend the Hebrews from their taskmasters, but couldn’t because his time had not yet come and God was yet to commission him. This is the problem so many are facing today. They are called by the name of the Lord, attend Church and even call the Lord God the name ‘Father’, but their lives and heart are far from Him; they work but not effectively because He to Whom they claim to give honour in their service receives them not. The reason many still continue in sin is because they have not yet heard God, not yet experienced and not yet known Him and so all they do are done in vain. This was same for young Samuel, who dwelt in the Temple ministering unto the Lord but without knowledge. Though he was a child dedicated entirely to the service of God, yet he didn’t know the God for Whom he was kept to serve until he encountered the Lord and heard His voice. Then he knew for Whom he dwelt in the Temple-1 Samuel 3:7. For Moses, when he realized Who spoke with him, he became afraid and trembled; and after that experience, he was changed.

When Jesus began His ministry, He separated Himself from the multitudes and climbed up a Mountain. This Mountain connotes God’s presence, for divine and special encounters, for a man who yearns to experience God’s divine touch. For one to encounter God’s touch, there must be a shift in desire… there must be hunger and yearning for Him. This mountain experience is essential if a man so desires to know God, for even in the Old Testament, men who loved God and so desired to experience Him were separated into a Mountain to stay and experience Him. For Moses, he experienced this great encounter with God; but for Jesus, it was with His disciples.

Atop this summit amidst many valleys, several things occur in the life of that man who takes time to press in for fellowship. You must know that this Mountain is a place of separation. Moses climbed it, became separated from the world and dwelt with God; thus, he became extraordinary. Also, this experience changes a man, for even Moses was changed before he got down. Again, it is here that transformation and transfiguration occurs, for even Jesus was transfigured upon a Mount. It is a place of power such as was received by Moses when he stayed up there with God. It makes men ready for service; for before you can fulfil the desire of God in your life, you have to be made. No man can be a minister, true worker and fellow citizen of the Kingdom of Heaven without first staying with God. You must STAY in order to BE MADE a disciple.

It was also at this mountaintop that God addressed Moses’ fearful attribute which had caused him to run away from before Pharaoh. Brethren, the reason Moses feared the Pharaoh of Egypt was because he had not yet known the Lord. The Bible says that, “…those who know their God shall be strong and shall do exploits…” He had to stay with God. And when his time came and he encountered God, he was purged, cleansed, changed, purified and transformed. He was converted and then commissioned by God to go back to Pharaoh (the same king he ran away from); and God promised to be with him. This means that for a man to conquer in the battle, he needs the presence of the Lord; for no one can overcome alone in this present Egypt. But before God’s presence can be with a man, that man must first be with God in the mountain; this was same with Moses. And while he dwelt there, God charged him to bring also to that same Mount, the children of Israel after they have been freed, so they could stay with Him, in order that His presence goes with them in their journey to the Promised Land. It was at the Mountain that Moses was converted, taught, equipped, encountered, and empowered for the work at hand. You too must be worked upon.

Jesus’ highest sermon or teachings of God’s kingdom was on the mountaintop-Matthew 5:1-12. One needs to climb the mountain, neglecting the busy, buzzling, hustling and crowded world so as to hear that tiny and still voice of God. For in the world, voices heard often distract a person from hearing clearly God’s words and so such must leave the environs of carnal flesh for the secret place of the Mountain. The Pharisees and Scribes had not heard before the mysteries which Jesus spoke that day because it came from the Mountaintop, a place meant for gaining knowledge and new experiences in God. Here, Mysteries are released, souls are saved, the hunger of men for Him are satiated and men experience God—Matthew 5:6. You must continue in the Word, even after being saved, so you can be established; for failure to do so may cause any little trial to put you in tune with complaining, a little test to make you doubt due to confusion, and little temptation turn you into a backslider.  I want to tell you that the Lord God Almighty, who dwells in Shekinah Glory of Heaven, always seeks out ways to reach out to man for fellowship, encounter, and spiritual renewal; but before this experience, He creates a spiritual place for such a communion. In Moses’s case, it was Mount Horeb, which the Bible recorded as was called the Mountain of God; in Jesus’ case, it also was a Mountain and even so it was for several men of old, all before Jesus went to the Cross. But in our time, it is where two or three are gathered in His name, in Spirit and in Truth- Matthew 18:18-20. It is where a man stays alone, separated from the Natural, in need of the Supernatural. The reason many still live in the Habitation of Fear is because they do not reside in the Mountain of the Lord, dwelling continually with Him; for if they will stay, then they will know that He who has saved them made a promise in His Book saying, “…AND, LO, I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS, EVEN UNTO THE END OF THE WORLD…”

So do you know he who can move in God’s presence, defeating the world and overcoming all?

It is only that man who shall FIND HIS DIRECTION IN THE LORD… ASCEND HIS HILL... AND ABIDE...!!!

REMAIN BLESSED!!!
